I Ching Hexagram #37:

Family

How to interpret "Family"

This hexagram reminds us that our releationships with family and friends can provide us with insight. We see reflections of ourselves in our relationships with those around us. Family is a microcosm. We must observe the ties we have with our family members and understand our place in the family to gain perspective on ourselves. Who holds authority in your family? Who plays the part of a follower? In which directions does love flow or not flow? Observe all aspects of family life. Valuable nuggets of insight are available now.

Changes in Line 1

"Creating Order""Creating Order"

To bring strength to the family as a whole, establishing rules of conduct and attitude is beneficial.

Changes in Line 2

"Nourishing Everyone"

Whether or not there is a central bread winner, a family that evenly divides the chores and duties will forge a stronger bond.

Changes in Line 3

"Solidifying through Arguments"

When tempers flare, and you feel separate from your family, don't assume rupture is all that there is. With any family argument, a door has actually been flung open, offering a path toward deeper closeness to the tribe. What may seem like a dividing gap is really a bridge to a deeper connection. Make amends and see that you can count on your family in times of need.

Changes in Line 4

"Cooperating is the Key to Prosperity"

Success comes when all family members work as a cohesive unit. There is great power in synergy

Changes in Line 5

"Trust Fosters Connectivity"

Whether you are a leader or a follower in the family, trust is what matters most. The kids must trust the adults, the adults must trust the kids, and the couple must trust each other. Trust brings true wealth to even the poorest family.

Changes in Line 6

"Directing with Truth"

Only the foolhardy individual uses deceit to try to bond a family together or get their way within its structure. The wise family member uses sincerity and inner truth in all actions and communications. Sincerity should be the guiding light in any team endeavor, be it in family or business.

A note on iFate's I Ching translation: This is not a direct translation of the original "Book of Changes" from 1000 BC. While multiple translations of the original text are available, they include many archaic references and can be difficult to understand for 21st century readers. iFate uses our own modern rewritings (two different editions) of the "Book of Changes" which makes interpreting I Ching readings far simpler. For iFate's additional contemporary re-writing of the original text, see our "Love I Ching" translation.
