I Ching Hexagram #12:

Waiting And Stagnation

How to interpret "Waiting And Stagnation"

NOTE: This is the "Love I-Ching" interpretation. For standard, non romance-specific I Ching interpretations please return to the reference page here.

This somewhat ominous hexagram symbolizes Heaven and Earth out of balance. It's a time when your love life may hit a wall, or get out-of-sync. You may find yourself waiting and hoping for someone or something to change. Stay the course. The wise person will utilize this time for creative renewal. Take a breather. Accept where you are and seek nothing new here (Any steps forward will likely be in the wrong direction). Even though the romantic energies may be flowing counter to your desires, you have the opportunity to access a kind of inner strength you may have long forgotten. This is a time for introspection, modesty and meditation. The wind has left the sails, and stillness has arrived. The head and the heart are in different places. Fear not, for while this period of stagnation may seem to last forever -- it will not. Love will return. That much is for sure.

Changes in Line 1

"Letting Love Bloom"

Your actions will have a large impact on someone else at this time. This line reminds us that forces that affect one person, also affect surrounding people. Stay conscious of what you do. Set a good example and love will bloom.

Changes in Line 2

"Be Patient and Endure"

A special someone may not live up to your expectations at this time. This line suggests that the only course of "action" is to wait it out. Those who are both wise and great will give no outward sign of discomfort or duress. They will walk bravely through this time and await a change in fortune.

Changes in Line 3

"Stay Authentic"

You run the risk of hurting someone at this time if you are not % authentic. This is a time for radical honesty and disclosure. You may feel vulnerable, but the rewards will be worth it.

Changes in Line 4

"Act With the Command of the Highest"

This line reminds us that the way to move forward from a period of stagnation is to commit to one's core beliefs and principles. If you act with the highest of intentions at all times, you will solve current relationship problems quickly and begin to move forward again.

Changes in Line 5

"Stagnation Gives Way"

Your inner strength has paid off. This line suggests that an individual (a man or a woman) will break the stagnation, and bring about a period of positive change and joyous connection.

Changes in Line 6

"Motion Resumes"

After a long period of standstill, there is new movement. Get help at this time and you will draw even more love to you. The ice is thawing and new life is emerging. This signifies a period of aliveness as energy returns, creativity blossoms, and relationships flourish.

A note on iFate's I Ching translation: This is not a direct translation of the original "Book of Changes" from 1000 BC. While multiple translations of the original text are available, they include many archaic references and can be difficult to understand for 21st century readers. iFate uses our own modern rewritings (two different editions) of the "Book of Changes" which makes interpreting I Ching readings far simpler. For iFate's additional contemporary re-writing of the original text, see our "Love I Ching" translation.
