The Meaning of the "Eight of Cups" Tarot Card
(Applies to the upright position)
The Symbolism of the Tarot Card:

A man walks dejectedly away from an array of cups, into a rocky and forbidding landscape. The moon looks on, closing its eyes to the situation. One cup appears to be missing - could the man have it in his hand? Is it even a man, as the sex and face have been obscured?

The Meaning of the Tarot Card:

A person is going to abandon or has abandoned the life of the individual. While this is most often a father walking away from the family unit to pursue other dreams or sexual desires, it could mean anything similar. The journey may not be permanent - it may be a journey of self-discovery so that the person may come back to the fold enriched for the experience. Going off course, succumbing to temptation. It can also signify the decline of a situation in general, or that something that the person thought was important could turn out to have little or no significance in the end to them. There are several exciting elements in this card, including the moon which is obscuring its eyes. Whatever the journey is that is being undertaken, it is a journey into the hidden, into the mystical. A journey to where no-one wants to look, but this individual has summed up the courage to do so. This card could be the beginning of the story of the figure in the Hermit card.
