Earth Lake
Water Heaven

The beginning hexagram #19 is built from the upper trigram of Earth over the lower trigram of Lake.

The following transformed hexagram, #5, can be broken down into a transitioned upper trigram of Water over a transitioned lower trigram of Heaven.

The starting hexagram #19:
"Approaching"

The meaning of hexagram #19

This hexagram references the positive concepts of anticipation and expectation. A time of growing power and energies which have not yet revealed themselves. Diligence and focus must be at maximal levels because a time of great flourishing is near. The period of late winter (just prior to the springtime) is also referenced here.

The changing lines between hexagram 19 and hexagram 5

Changing line #3

"Overly Confident Approach"- While things seem to be going well on one hand they are often falling apart on another. It is important to think broadly. A change in this line near the center of this hexagram suggests that small successes have bred an overconfidence which now undermines the overall progress. Do not take things for granted.

Changing line #5

"Advancing Wisdom"- There is anticipation towards that which approaches. But anticipation must not give way to over-eagerness or rash decisions. Wisdom must be sought out and allowed the proper time. Self-restraint must conquer self-gratification. Do not give in to anticipation. Allow events to unfold at their own pace.

The future hexagram #5:
"Patience"

The meaning of hexagram #5

The lesson of this hexagram is that good things come to those who wait. Patience requires both inner strength and a commitment to resist the temptation of acting prematurely. Often hardships will arise in the course of one's time spent waiting. The message here is that those who endure these hardships, and "cross great streams" will emerge victorious. Do not be put off your path at this time.
