Water Earth
Wind Earth

The beginning hexagram #8 breaks down into the upper trigram of Water on top of the lower trigram of Earth.

The successive transformed hexagram, #20, breaks down into a newly transformed upper trigram of Wind on top of an unchanged lower trigram of Earth.

The starting hexagram #8:
"Union"

The meaning of hexagram #8

This hexagram represents the binding force, or commitments that exist between two people or organizations. Through union we become more powerful and yet we must also remember that to some extent we become less free. Strong commitment and authority is required, but so is a letting go of personal desires for the sake of the greater good. Union is an agreement and a blessing. It is a force for strength, but it must also be nurtured and protected. A union that is not defended will eventually shatter.

The changing lines between hexagram 8 and hexagram 20

Changing line #6

"A Union Without a Head"- This changing line at the top of the hexagram is a warning that relationships and loyalties were entered without prior thoughtfulness. Misfortune awaits. The body has acted without the mind. Fools rush in.

The future hexagram #20:
"Meditation"

The meaning of hexagram #20

The meaning of this hexagram is meditation and contemplation, but the visual significance is that of a tower with a broad view which enables one to meditate on the wider landscape rather than immediate events. An additional meaning of this tower is that the tower itself can be seen for many miles, suggesting "an example" being set for others. This is a time to reflect carefully on what has gone before, and what is happening now in a broader sense. Decisions made at this time will be witnessed by many.
