Wind Heaven
Thunder Water

The starting hexagram #9 is built from the upper trigram of Wind positioned above the lower trigram of Heaven.

The second completed hexagram, #40, deconstructs into a new, changed upper trigram of Thunder positioned above a new, changed lower trigram of Water.

The starting hexagram #9:
"Wind and Clouds"

The meaning of hexagram #9

This hexagram indicates dark clouds on the horizon. There is still no rain, and the clouds do not appear to be moving closer because the wind keeps them at bay. The underlying meaning here is that a weak force is capable of restraining a stronger force. Subtlety is called for here. Negotiation will beat direct force and charm will prove to be stronger than coercion. There is still time.

The changing lines between hexagram 9 and hexagram 40

Changing line #1

"Return to the Path"- As we explore life's possibilities we frequently come across obstacles which cannot be passed. This changing line at the base of the hexagram reminds us that we are free to return to the point where we left the path. From there it will be possible to journey smoothly. At this time good fortune awaits on the more travelled road.

Changing line #3

"The Wheels Come Off the Wagon"- This changing line offers a warning against pushing forward against powerful opposition. A wagon has been pushed to the limits and now it faces destruction as the wheels are torn from the spokes. The result is tension all around: relationships falter and loyalties are tested. The outcome looks unfortunate.

Changing line #4

"If You are Sincere, There is No Blame"- There are times when one must intervene in the actions of a loved one, a good friend or a superior. The changes in this line indicate that even though this intervention may cause strife, in the end there will be no blame if your cause is just.

Changing line #5

"Sincere Attachment Brings Rewards"- The synergy between two parties or people is greater than the energy of each individual. This changing line, near the top of this hexagram, references the additional power that can be created by a combination of forces. Romance and favorable business partnerships are referenced here.

Changing line #6

"The Rainfall Brings a Time of Rest"- This changing line at the top of the hexagram symbolizes a cloudburst and a release of tensions. Success has come at last, but with it come new dangers. Be comfortable with modest gains but do not overextend yourself for more. There is danger in greed and persistance. This changing line also indicates a female victory.

The future hexagram #40:
"Deliverance"

The meaning of hexagram #40

"Freedom from hardship" is the meaning of this welcome hexagram. Some challenges will still lie ahead, but the stage has been set for success. You have disentangled yourself from opposing forces. Your projects, ideas and dreams are destined to come to fruition. This is a time to rally your support base, and clear the air of any tensions and grievances. This is a time to forgive and forget. Let worries wash away like water.
