I Ching Hexagram #33

This is a time to slow down and take a break. Love and wellbeing can often be increased by first pausing or slowing down temporarily, before again moving forward. Step off the "romantic battlefield" for a time. Knowingly trust that love is not lost by taking such a break. This is a great time to take yourself out or treat yourself to something. Meditate and go inward. Notice how much you've learned from past relationships. Be willing to survey your progress as well places you still feel stuck. Let go of ideas and beliefs that hold you back from your deepest goals. Reevaluate everything about love and life. Retreat is a sign of strength here. This type of retreat is not the same as giving up; this is a regrouping of cosmic forces. The fire of love will soon burn even more brightly for you as a result.

Changing Lines in Hexagram #33

Changes in Line 1

"Retreating without Hesitation"

Why wait until the last minute to retreat? If the signs are pointing to a beneficial retreat, the wise person pursues their escape route immediately. If your love life has hit a rough patch, take some time to look at it from the sidelines.

Changes in Line 2

"Deciding Deliberately"

Once retreat is set as your course of action, don't look back. Activate your decision with a sense of vigor and trust. Know that your actions now are paving the way toward deeper love down the road. Don't let your decision go astray. Tie yourself to your decision as if you are tying up a wild horse.

Changes in Line 3

"Handling Blocks"

The 2 Trigrams Inside Hexagram #33

I Ching hexagram #33 is made of two 3-line trigrams stacked over and under each other. The lower three lines of hexagram #33 form the trigram for Mountain, while the upper three lines form the trigram for Heaven.

NOTE: An easy way to think about the two trigrams is that the hexagram's upper trigram references external forces, while the lower trigram references internal forces.

Hexagram #33's Lower Trigram of Mountain

The silent and majestic trigram for mountain represents both stillness and something permanent. The mountain is full of might, silent and unchanging. Simultaneously, its effect is calming and non-combative. The mountain trigram may also reference a 'third-born son' or the map direction of northeast.

Hexagram #33's Upper Trigram of Heaven

The elegant trigram of Heaven is also referred to as the the Creative. It symbolizes raw, perfect creative energy. The pure trigram of Heaven is a representation of power and pure truth. It may also indicate a father figure — or the compass direction northwest.

A note on iFate's I Ching translation: This is not a direct translation of the original "Book of Changes" from 1000 BC. While multiple translations of the original text are available, they include many archaic references and can be difficult to understand for 21st century readers. iFate uses our own modern rewritings (two different editions) of the "Book of Changes" which makes interpreting I Ching readings far simpler.
